I was amazed by the QCRI vision and its ambition to be one of the best research labs in the world. That's why I wanted to be a part of this project.

Research Focus at QCRI

Dr. Sofiane Abbar is a Senior Software Engineer in the Social Computing Group @Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI).

Prior to joining QCRI, he worked as a temporary assistant professor at University of Paris Dauphine in France. In 2010 Dr. Abbar earned his Ph.D. in computer science from University of Versailles Saint Quentin en Yvelines in collaboration with Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs  (France), which partly financed his Ph.D.

Dr. Abbar has contributed since 2011 to the design and implementation of various large-scale and real-time platforms for social analytics, applied to news analytics, health informatics and urban computing. He has also acted as a Program Committee member in conferences including CHI, CIKM, ICWSM, ACM Digital Health, EDBT and ER.

Dr. Abbar's research interests include urban computing and smart cities. He is currently working on projects related to urban mobility, congestion monitoring and forecasting, map inference and city resilience.

Previous Experience

Before joining QCRI, Sofiane was a PhD candidate at Versailles University. There, he had been involved in two CNRS projects (APMD and AOC), and one industrial project (UUPP) with Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs. His contributions to these projects focused on data personalization, user modeling, context-awareness, and recommendation systems.
