" I have always been intrigued by new challenges as they provide the best opportunities to make progress in life. By joining QCRI, I accepted the challenge to help build a strong research institute that strives for pursuing world-class research to advance science and technology in the interest of society in a happening part of the World, Qatar.

Research Focus at QCRI

Ferda's main research interests include multimedia signal processing, computer vision, machine learning, and human-computer interaction. He has also recently started exploring areas like wearable computing, quantified self and personal informatics. One thread of his research activities at QCRI seeks to bring new perspectives from computer vision and machine learning into crisis computing and disaster response. Another thread explores new research grounds for developing innovative solutions in the medical and healthcare domain by combining wearable and mobile technology with social media monitoring and data mining techniques.

Previous Experience

Before joining QCRI, Ferda was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California – Berkeley where he built a multimodal data acquisition system, collected a comprehensive human action database and researched on human body motion analysis and action recognition. He also worked on the design and development of an interactive physical exercise system for remote coaching of the elderly population at UCB. Prior to joining UCB, he pursued his doctoral studies at Koc University where he concentrated on multimodal dance performance analysis and music-driven dance synthesis, as well as, facial expression analysis and speech-driven facial expression synthesis.
